Bees seem to have a fatal attraction to nectar in flowers that are treated with insecticide. Research overseas shows the insects have an almost death wish and swarm over crops that have been sprayed. Dennis Carter suggests farmers use chemicals that are bee-friendly rather than those that aren’t. 

Grain prices continue to be hit as palm kernel prices drop.  A price war has set in over the imported product that has led to further drops in grain prices. Growers are desperately trying to point out that grain is much more nutritious, but with the down turn in milk prices, most farmers are looking at price rather than what’s better for their stock.

Dairy farmers must talk with their accountants and bankers. That’s the advice from Federated Farmers Canterbury chair Cam Henderson. He says bankers and accountants are there to help, but he admits it can be a hard decision to make the appointment. He says the down turn is bad but those who hang in with be rewarded in future years.

Dairy farmers are trimming the expenses and delaying spending on fertiliser and farm maintenance in an endeavour to make it through the down turn. Kerry Adams from DAA charted accountants says personal spending have totally dried up and farmers are in survival mode. However, he says those who share their situation with accountants and bankers will be given full support to get through.
